Fast internet speed may be limited by the device you are using so choose a newer computer with an Ethernet port to do the test.
Be sure to use a quality Ethernet cable, preferably CAT5e or CAT6.
How do I run a speed test?
Let’s test your internet speed
Connect your computer directly to your modem. If you choose to test your speed using a device connected over home Wi-Fi, your results may be limited to the Wi-Fi capabilities or antennas in your device, signal interference, and other factors.
Pause online activity on all the other devices in your home and put them in offline mode during the test.
Every device online reduces your available speed because they share your total home connection.
Go to www.fido.ca/speedtest and click GO to run your speedtest.
Bear in mind, the download speed you need for different activities will vary.
Basic surfing and checking emails require very little speed.
Streaming music, video calls and gaming require more speed to download the larger file sizes.
4K streaming requires the most speed to support higher video resolution.
Suggested download speeds needed for different activities
Activity | Typical Download Speed Needed PER DEVICE |
Emails & web surfing | 0.5 to 1 Mbps |
Music streaming | 1 to 2 Mbps |
SD video streaming | 2 to 3 Mbps |
Video calls & gaming | 3 to 5 Mbps |
HD video streaming | 5 to 25 Mbps |
4K video streaming | 25 to 50 Mbps |
