Your Fido modem offers dual-band WiFi, meaning it broadcasts two network frequencies to choose from:

2.4 GHz – for broader WiFi coverage
5 GHz – for faster speeds

Band steering is a feature that simplifies your home WiFi experience by automatically and continuously connecting your devices to the frequency that’s offering the best signal, least amount of interference and is overall better suited to your device. When band steering is enabled, how does my modem decide which frequency to connect to?

Your modem will continuously monitor the following on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies:

Signal interference
How many devices are connected to WiFi
The amount of usage from each device

Over time, your modem considers this information when automatically choosing the frequency that’s best suited for your device.

If your device is 5 GHz-compatible, your modem will try to connect to that network by default. This makes sure that, when possible, your devices get the benefits of the 5 GHz frequency, like faster speeds and reduced radio interference.
